FULL-TIME ADULT ESL INSTRUCTOR
Reports To: Executive Director
Location: Albuquerque Adult Learning Center (ABQ-ALC), Albuquerque, NM
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: Approximately 30-32 hours per week
Compensation: Depending on Experience
POSITION SUMMARY
The Albuquerque Adult Learning Center (ABQ-ALC) seeks an experienced Adult ESL Instructor to deliver high-quality English language instruction to adult learners in a multi-level classroom. The successful candidate will independently manage all aspects of instruction, student engagement, attendance monitoring, assessment coordination, documentation, and educational goal attainment while supporting ABQ-ALC’s mission to help adults achieve educational, career, and life goals.
This position serves immigrant, refugee, and multilingual adult learners representing diverse educational backgrounds and language levels. The instructor will utilize evidence-based adult education practices, College and Career Readiness Standards, integrated workforce preparation strategies, and data-informed instructional practices to support measurable student outcomes.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student persistence, measurable skill gains, workforce readiness, and successful transitions to educational and career pathways.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Classroom Management
- Plan and deliver engaging multi-level ESL instruction addressing listening, speaking, reading, writing, digital literacy, workforce readiness, and civic engagement skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of Beginning through Advanced ESL learners (NRS ESL Levels 1–6).
- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
- Utilize approved curricula and instructional resources including Burlington English, Ventures, digital learning platforms, and supplemental materials.
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
- Establish classroom expectations, monitor student progress, and implement retention strategies to improve persistence and attendance.
- Integrate workforce preparation, digital literacy, career pathway exploration, and community engagement activities into instruction as appropriate.
- Utilize student performance data, attendance trends, assessment results, and educational plans to inform instructional decisions and improve measurable student outcomes.
- Provide guidance and support to classroom volunteers, tutors, teacher aides, and interns as assigned.
Student Assessment and Data Management
- Support student intake, orientation, and educational planning activities.
- Administer or coordinate required pre- and post-assessments including TABE assessments when assigned or when students transition to Adult Basic Education or High School Equivalency pathways.
- Monitor student attendance, instructional hours, educational functioning level progress, and measurable skill gains.
- Maintain accurate student records and documentation.
- Ensure timely submission of attendance, progress reports, testing referrals, and other program documentation.
- Conduct student outreach and follow-up for excessive absences and support re-engagement efforts to improve student persistence and retention.

Program Performance and Compliance
- Support data-driven decision making through regular review of student performance and classroom outcomes.
- Contribute to program goals related to enrollment, retention, measurable skill gains, educational functioning level completion, credential attainment, and transition outcomes.
- Maintain compliance with New Mexico Adult Education Division requirements, federal AEFLA regulations, NRS accountability measures, and ABQ-ALC policies and procedures.
- Maintain familiarity with ABQ-ALC programs, community resources, workforce development services, and referral partners to support student success and connect learners with available opportunities.
- Participate in required staff meetings, professional development activities, instructional trainings, and program improvement initiatives.
- Assist with student recruitment, orientation, community outreach activities, and special events as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, ESL, Linguistics, English, Adult Education, or related field.
- Three years of experience teaching adult ESL learners, preferably within a federally funded Adult Education program.
- Experience teaching multi-level classrooms.
- Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse adult populations.
- Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, and educational technology platforms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, Adult Education, or related certification.
- Master’s Degree in Adult Education, Applied Linguistics, or related field.
- Experience in federally funded Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) programs.
- Experience with Burlington English.
- Experience with LACES student data management systems.
- Experience supporting student transitions to workforce training, postsecondary education, citizenship preparation, or career pathways.
- Experience supervising volunteers, tutors, practicum students, or instructional aides.
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
