As a Tier 1 delivery partner to leading CPOs, we design and deliver thousands of EV charging connections across the UK, including LV and HV infrastructure, substations, private networks and associated civil engineering works.

Due to continued growth, we are seeking an ambitious and technically capable ICP Design Engineer to join our expanding Pre-Construction and Technical Services team.

Role Overview

The ICP Design Engineer will be responsible for the development, coordination and delivery of LV and HV network designs from initial feasibility through to DNO approval, construction support and final energisation.

The successful candidate will play a key role in determining optimal connection strategies, identifying suitable Points of Connection (POCs), producing G81 & BS7671 compliant designs, and supporting the delivery of EV charging infrastructure, battery energy storage, renewable energy and private network projects throughout the UK.

This position requires a strong understanding of DNO and IDNO requirements, ICP delivery processes, electrical distribution design principles and commercial awareness to develop practical, buildable and cost-effective solutions.

Key ResponsibilitiesNetwork Design & Connection Strategy

  • Develop LV and HV network designs in accordance with G81, ENA Engineering Recommendations and DNO-specific standards.
  • Take ownership of connection strategies from feasibility through to energisation.
  • Identify and determine the most appropriate Point of Connection (POC) considering:
  • Available network capacity
  • Programme constraints
  • Commercial viability
  • Buildability
  • Future network requirements
  • Produce contestable and non-contestable design scopes.
  • Develop single line diagrams, schematic drawings and detailed network layouts.
  • Design new LV and HV cable networks, service connections and private electrical infrastructure.
  • Support the design of package substations, switching stations and associated equipment.

DNO & IDNO Liaison

  • Prepare and submit:
  • Budget estimate applications
  • Point of Connection applications
  • Design submissions
  • Technical queries
  • Diversion applications
  • Capacity requests
  • Act as a technical interface with:
  • DNOs
  • IDNOs
  • ICP partners
  • Local Authorities
  • Clients
  • Consultants
  • Manage technical responses and design revisions through to approval.

Electrical Design & Calculations

  • Undertake electrical design calculations including:
  • Cable sizing
  • Voltage drop assessments
  • Fault level studies
  • Load assessments
  • Diversity calculations
  • Protection grading studies
  • Earthing calculations
  • Produce buildable and compliant network designs.
  • Ensure designs satisfy statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Review third-party technical submissions where required.

Design Production

  • Produce and manage:
  • Design packs
  • Construction drawings
  • Cable schedules
  • Equipment schedules
  • Bill of quantities
  • Design risk assessments
  • Design change documentation
  • Utilise:
  • VisNet Design
  • AutoCAD
  • ElectricalOM
  • GIS mapping systems
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Other industry-standard design software
  • Maintain accurate design records and document control procedures.

Project Delivery Support

  • Provide technical support to:
  • Project Managers
  • Site Managers
  • Delivery Teams
  • Commissioning Engineers
  • Attend site visits when required.
  • Assist with technical issue resolution during construction.
  • Support commissioning and energisation activities.
  • Review as-built documentation and ensure compliance with approved designs.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support the ongoing development of:
  • Design standards
  • Technical procedures
  • Templates
  • Design libraries
  • Quality assurance processes
  • Contribute to lessons learned reviews and technical improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in mentoring junior engineers and technical staff where required.

Experience & QualificationsEssential

  • HNC, HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience within an ICP, IDNO or DNO environment.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • G81
  • ENA Engineering Recommendations
  • Electricity distribution networks
  • ICP delivery processes
  • Experience preparing Point of Connection applications.
  • Experience developing LV network designs.
  • Ability to interpret DNO connection offers and technical requirements.
  • Competent user of AutoCAD and VisNet Design (or equivalent).
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Experience designing HV networks up to 11kV.
  • Knowledge of EV charging infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of substations and earthing systems.
  • NERS-related experience.
  • Membership of a recognised engineering institution.
  • Working towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
