DEPARTMENT: Product Group – Digital Products
LOCATION: Any BBC location.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £70,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Senior Product Manager in the Web Video Experiences group, you will lead the evolution of the BBC’s video playback experience across web surfaces.
You will be responsible for defining and delivering innovative in-player experiences—such as enhanced playback controls, chapters and moments, contextual data overlays (e.g. for live sport), and end-of-playback journeys—that help audiences navigate, understand and engage more deeply with BBC video content.
Working within the Experience organisation, you will operate on top of the BBC’s Standard Media Player (SMP), partnering closely with platform teams to extend its capabilities while optimising the user experience for web audiences.
You will collaborate with product teams across Web, TV, Mobile and other BBC services, as well as editorial and marketing partners, to ensure a consistent, high-quality and forward-looking playback experience.
A key part of the role will be identifying opportunities to innovate in video UX—particularly in live and event-based content—and using data and audience insight to continuously improve engagement, usability and accessibility.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
Video is central to how audiences experience the BBC—from breaking news and live sport to on-demand programmes. The Web Video Experiences team sits at the heart of this, shaping how millions of users interact with video content every day.
You will have the opportunity to define and deliver innovative features such as chapters and moments, contextual overlays for live and event-based content, and compelling end-of-playback experiences that guide users to what to watch next.
Working across a broad set of BBC products—including iPlayer, News and Sport—you will operate in a highly collaborative environment, influencing both platform capabilities and user-facing experiences.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of video on the web at scale, experimenting with new interaction models and raising the bar for playback experiences across one of the UK’s most widely used digital ecosystems.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Define and lead the product strategy for video playback experiences across BBC web, identifying opportunities to improve how audiences interact with video content in-player.
- Own the end-to-end delivery of innovative playback features, including chapters and moments, contextual overlays (e.g. for live sport and events), and end-of-playback experiences that drive continued engagement.
- Use data, audience insight and experimentation to optimise playback journeys—improving metrics such as engagement, content discovery and user satisfaction.
- Work closely with engineering teams and the Standard Media Player (SMP) platform team to extend player capabilities, ensuring seamless integration between platform and experience layers.
- Collaborate with product, editorial and design teams across iPlayer, News, Sport and other BBC services to deliver consistent and high-quality video experiences across web surfaces.
- Identify opportunities to innovate in live and event-based playback, enhancing real-time experiences through features such as dynamic overlays and improved navigation within live streams.
- Lead cross-functional teams through ambiguity, setting clear direction, prioritising effectively and balancing innovation with delivery at scale.
- Communicate product strategy, progress and impact to senior stakeholders, influencing decisions across multiple teams and disciplines.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Demonstrable experience leading the strategy, development and delivery of complex digital products at scale.
- Proven ability to use data, audience insight and experimentation to identify opportunities, inform decision-making and measure impact.
- Experience working effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, design, research and delivery, to achieve product outcomes.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with experience aligning teams and driving decisions across complex organisational environments.
- Experience leading through ambiguity, setting strategic direction and balancing short-term delivery with longer-term product vision.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Experience working on live streaming or event-based video experiences.
- Experience working with shared media platforms or player frameworks (e.g. SDKs).
- Experience delivering accessible video experiences.
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
