  • Start Date: June 2026

The Role

We are seeking a male Specialist SEN Tutor to support a bright and engaging Year 2 learner who is currently out of school and awaiting a specialist SEMH placement.

This is not a traditional tutoring role. The successful tutor will focus initially on building trust, confidence and engagement with learning before gradually introducing academic content through play, interests and relationship-based approaches.

The student has experienced significant early childhood trauma and presents with ADHD, emotional dysregulation and school avoidance. He requires a calm, patient and highly skilled practitioner who understands that progress begins with connection.

About the Student

This young learner is:

  • Bright, capable and curious when emotionally regulated
  • Currently out of education following the breakdown of his school placement
  • Diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • Awaiting further assessment for Autism
  • Working below expected levels due to prolonged disruption to education
  • Highly anxious with a strong need for control and predictability

He enjoys:

  • Lego and construction activities
  • Minecraft
  • Football
  • Nature, insects and wildlife
  • Forest School activities
  • Climbing and outdoor exploration
  • Junk modelling and making things

Learning Approach Required

This learner will not engage with formal, desk-based teaching initially.

Successful sessions will:

  • Be highly practical, play-based and interest-led
  • Focus on relationship building first
  • Use Lego, games, construction activities and outdoor learning opportunities
  • Incorporate English and Maths naturally within activities
  • Help the student learn without feeling like he is being formally taught

Learning should be delivered through:

  • Short, structured activities (around 5 minutes initially)
  • Visual timetables and Now/Next boards
  • Choice and control wherever possible
  • Frequent movement and sensory breaks
  • Consistent routines and expectations
  • Low-demand, low-pressure interactions

Essential Experience

Applicants must have:

  • Experience supporting children with ADHD and SEMH needs
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice
  • Experience using co-regulation and Emotion Coaching approaches
  • Confidence supporting children displaying challenging behaviours
  • Ability to build trust with highly anxious and wary learners
  • Experience delivering learning through play and child-led activities
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills

Experience with Autism, ODD, EBSA and Trauma Perceptive Practice would be highly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build a positive, trusting relationship with the student
  • Deliver engaging, play-based sessions linked to English, Maths and communication skills
  • Support emotional regulation and confidence building
  • Use visual supports and structured routines
  • Liaise with family and professionals involved in the support package
  • Provide concise session feedback and progress updates
  • Maintain a safe, predictable and nurturing learning environment

Important Information

  • A male tutor is required for this placement at family request.
  • Tuition will initially take place within the family home.
  • The longer-term aim is to transition learning into a community venue once the student feels safe and comfortable with the tutor.
  • Consistency is critical; the student can be wary of unfamiliar adults and requires time to build trust.
  • Safeguarding awareness and professional boundaries are essential.

Schedule

  • Wednesdays only
  • 2-hour session
  • Any time between 10:00am and 2:00pm
  • Potential to increase hours gradually as engagement develops
